Love, I thought I knew love, in fact I would usually classify myself as a romantic/ loverholic. I have never felt that emotion towards a significant other, but I have a lot of love for my family and friends so I assumed I knew about it.
Till I started reading my bible.
I read about the love and friendship shared between God and David and I know, that nothing, nothing, in fact I repeat it, NOTHING can come close to that kind of love.
Oh how God would fill David with his presence and his spirit that he was fully inspired and Level 5000 charged to write 150 chapters of psalms. I’ll break it down One- Hundred and fifty chapters with chapter 119 spanning into 176 verses. (#wow #gimmiethat)
In between all of his warring, David, a true friend of God always respected, revered and inquired of the lord, he saw and understood to a large extent the unlimited power of the God he served which is why when his camp was raided and his wives taken, he “encouraged himself in the Lord”
He then went on to Inquire, “shall I pursue” think about this, he was absolutely devastated and his men were ready to kill him there and then! And nobody would ask a thing, I mean Saul was certainly not on his side, but amidst all the chaos going on, he asked his friend, his superior friend “shall I go?”
Logically it would have made sense for him to go after the Amalekites that had his family and possessions.
But God being faithful to his “friend” replied, “you may go, you will overtake, and you will surely recover” that was a conversation between friends, 1 being absolutely devastated and the other being the ultimate cheerleader.
Today we have that song by Israel Houghton “friend of God” and it is such a hit everywhere, everybody goes ballistic as they shout “I am a friend of God woooh oooh” but are you truly a friend? What kind of a friend are you? Hopefully not a leach that only remembers your friend when you are in need?
How much time do you spend time with your friend? How many times have you just felt the goodness of your friend and simply thanked without a request, have you any idea, the kind of friend you have? Do you know what he likes? How then can you sing I am a friend of God?
Oh, that I would have that sort of friendship myself that David enjoyed.
After David (the man after God’s heart) passed, because of the love God had for his servant, he extended his friendship to Solomon.
Now Solomon having learned well from his father I want to assume was able to bring God close to him to the point that God came down in all his glory and magnificence to attend to him TWICE!!!!.
Yes we all know from Sunday school that Solomon was the wisest king, but I never really looked to see about the other blessings God “scattered” him with. I read in my bible that during Solomon’s reign, silver was a cheap commodity because gold was in abundance and nowhere in his absolutely positively ravishingly distinguished palace did he use silver for anything, oh and the temple he built to God? Absolute oh la la.
Pure gold, the altar room Solomon had built, the cherub statues about 7ft of pure gold, the basins, pure gold! May I just say that even the Olympic gold medal is majorly made of silver and then a lesser percent of gold (I’m guessing the percentage of gold used is to give it color)
His whole kingdom! Never experienced lack! Hunger or strife! People will literally come to his abode, simply to sit in his presence and hear God’s wisdom through him. God gave him peace during his time. Not 1 country came to war with him, NOT ONE.
Its recorded in the bible that queen Sheba brought such an array of spices from her country (Ethiopia) that nowhere again has there been a gifting of spices of that magnitude.
Think about it, Proverbs, Songs of Solomon and Ecclesiastes, all he wrote. Till his love for women, overtook his love and friendship with God.
Now reading through first and second kings, after Solomon’s foolishness, God divided the kingdom between Jeroboam and Rehoboam, with Rehoboam Solomon’s son having Judah and the city of David and Jeroboam having the rest as Israel, the bible recorded that these two men were NOTHING like God’s servant David who served the lord all of his life(apart from that one time he went all lusty gangster with Bathsheba) now between Israel and Judah, they had the rubbishest of kings, (English has permitted me) who sinned and forgot God, a literal succession of various weak minded, poor hearted, evil, enemies of God and at some point I would read that these men were not like God’s servant David, or after reading about the nonsense these new kings allowed and did, the bible will state that because of the promise God made to his servant David, that he would always have someone from his line on the throne, God did not completely destroy Judah.
So from David’s death at the end of 2nd Samuel to 2 kings’ chapter 18,there wasn’t a king that God fully supported like he did David and till Hezekiah . Asa and Joash tried, but they didn’t achieve the full friendship that David was privileged to enjoy.
Wow, what love that God had for this 1 man, and I ask myself wasn’t he human? I mean people say “we are all human…nobody is perfect” but I believe that David perfected the art of his friendship with God! He may have sinned that 1 time, but even that sin wasn’t big enough to come between the Love God had for him which is why I want to believe God punished him almost instantly for his sin so they could continue to be the best of friends they were.
What have I basically been talking about?
1) Love is God not wiping out a whole generation for you.
2) Love is God showing you unlimited, uncommon, unmerited favour just because he can.
3) Love is God saying “ such and such is a person after my own heart”
4) Love is God keeping his promises and personally selecting your lineage to send his son through.
I know God’s love for me is unending, unchanging, immeasurable and overwhelming but I want that David kinda loving from this same God, that David kinda friendship with this same God. That is one relationship I am willing to invest in.
What about you?
